Welcome to the OCHRE STORE
OCHRE was started by two friends at a London art school who started making things they liked regardless of the latest trends. Their elegant understated style proved very popular with a wide audience including the Design Press. Ten years later (and after a third partner had joined), OCHRE and I teamed up to open a shop on Broome Street in Soho, New York. The store is not just meant to showcase OCHRE’s beautiful range of furniture and lighting but also curates other people’s work; rare and exceptional pieces that complement the OCHRE line. OCHRE’s design philosophy always emphasizes the use of high quality materials and flawless craftsmanship to create objects which are both timeless and contemporary - and everything in the OCHRE STORE endeavours to echo these principles.
When we opened, we began by going through our own cupboards at home – pieces we’d collected along the way from artists and craftspeople who share something of our vision and whose things are exquisitely made. Our collection has now expanded to include a wider range of world artists and craftspeople making mainly for the home - although we always find space for things from other categories that are beautifully designed and suit our environment.
We also love mixing old with new and hunt down a selection of amazing antiques and vintage pieces from the UK, France and Italy that complement the new OCHRE pieces.
We focus on products made under fair trade as well as green principles. Partly because it’s the only sustainable way to live in today’s world. Partly because we have found amazing craftspeople who are glad to work with us in small quantities making things from our own designs. We also love working with Aid to Artisans, a non profit organization that helps artisans in developing countries bring their products to the US and Europe.
We have also established a collective of designers who share our sensibility and approach to design. The collective makes things exclusively for the OCHRE STORE under the name, collective(462). The range includes original designs made out of textiles, ceramics, wood and glass and any other medium that we think will be beautiful and fun.
